Leader of People, Follower of Christ

Before I was a leader of people,

I was a follower of Christ.

Now that I am a leader of people,

May I still be a follower of Christ.

Many times in leadership, we spend so much time and focus “leading” people that we forget to “follow” Jesus.

I’m not saying that we aren’t saved or that we have denied Jesus. What am I am saying is that its easy to get distracted and lose focus of what’s most important. We try and figure out how to be better at leading people (which is good) that we miss what people really need to see in us. People need to see how to be a “follower” of Christ. They need to see that Jesus is who WE are following, modeling, and patterning our life after. That Jesus is the perfect example of how to live our lives and how to love people, lead people, and serve people.

Jesus said, “come, FOLLOW ME, and I will make you fishers of men.”

We as leaders sometimes get frustrated when we see people come to church week after week but they aren’t becoming “followers” of Christ. We then try to figure out what can we do better as a leader to help them live for Jesus everyday and be a follower of Christ.

THE ANSWER TO BEING A GOOD LEADER IS TO BE A GOOD FOLLOWER. A follower of Jesus.

The best leaders are the leaders that show their followers how to be a follower of Christ. People need us a leaders to follow Christ with all of our hearts and submit to Him daily and ask Him to lead our lives. As they see our dedication to allowing the Spirit of God to lead our lives and how vitally important it is to follow Christ, they will model that same behavior. My youth pastor once said, “you reproduce who you are, not what you say.” We can say all the right things but if our actions don’t show what is most important, people won’t live that out either.

Never forget that before you ever led anyone, you were a follower of Jesus, so follow Him with all your heart, mind, soul, and strength. He will help you to be the leader you were destined to be.
